This panel is part of a 12-part webinar series titled, "The Syrian Revolution: A History from Below." It will consider the struggle for Kurdish self-determination in Syria and its complex relation to movements for liberation across the country. Speakers will discuss grassroots Kurdish participation in the 2011 Syrian revolution and the emergence of a divide between Kurdish and Arab opposition currents. They will outline the council-based system of governance in Rojava and its relationship to the leading political party, the PYD, and its military factions. They will also consider the political orientation of the PYD and its relations with other Kurdish political tendencies, forces representing the regime and the Arab opposition, and international powers. Participants will discuss grassroots politics and feminist struggles in Rojava.
