The international campaign for Rojava has called for days of global action on the 18th and 19th of July in response to Turkey’s recent attacks on Rojava and Southern Kurdistan (Bashur). As part of this call, we will be doing a car & bike caravan in NYC on July 19.
In June, Turkey began a series of airstrikes and ground attacks on Southern Kurdistan, which constituted its biggest operation in that area since 2015. Besides targeting PKK camps, Turkey also attacked civilian villages, the Makhmur refugee camp, home to more than 10,000 Kurdish refugees from Turkey, and the Şengal region inhabited by the Yezidi religious community, which was subjected several years ago to a genocidal attack by ISIS. These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 6 civilians. In another incident, a drone strike wounded a family with children in a village in Southern Kurdistan, leaving one woman without a leg. At the same time, Turkey escalated its activities in Rojava, bombing the region and assassinating three women with a drone. One of those killed was Zehra Berkel, a leading member of Kongra Star, a confederation of women's groups in Rojava. Disturbingly, Turkey’s latest actions have drawn little condemnation on the part of the international community even though the attacks violate international law.
And this is why, we are inviting you to a car & bike caravan on July 19th, 1 pm. We will be making noise to bring awareness to Turkey’s recent attacks. Please don’t be late, as this is a moving demonstration. Bring signs & banners to wave and hang on your car or bike. We will be meeting beforehand outside the Barnes and Noble at Union Square. Our route will include the Turkish Consulate and Trump Tower on 5th Ave.
Location: Barnes & Noble, Union Square at 33 E 17th St
